When did you start writing?
I honestly can’t remember a time I wasn’t writing. Even as a small child I was constantly creating fantasy worlds, writing mini plays for my cousins to act out and writing stories. I think when I was about nine I wrote to penguin publishing to query a story I had written (as I recall they sent me a lovely letter back explaining that their lists were closed at that time, but encouraging me to keep writing, which was very kind).
I published my first short story collection, Strange Love – Short Stories and Twisted Tales, back in 2012, having had a few pieces of flash fiction accepted for anthologies which built my confidence as a writer. I followed up with Strange Worlds -Surreal Stories and Tainted Tales a year or so later. Don’t tell Strange Love, but I much prefer Strange Worlds. I am hoping to complete the collection later this year, with the final Strange Stories book, provisionally entitled Strange Times.
I love playing around with fairytales, so shortly after Strange Worlds had been released I wrote my novella A Tale Of Two Princes; a modern interpretation of sleeping beauty and the frog prince, set in a hospital for aliens, supernatural creatures and other anomalies. I hope to revisit some of the characters that appeared in there soon, particularly Malcolm the teenaged were-fox.
I’ve just finished drafting two novels – a sci-fi dystopia called Before Digital Dreams and a novel called Baby Steps, which is the first year of a baby’s life, told from the point of view of the baby.
Writing has been such a huge part of my life for as long g as I can remember. I can’t imagine ever giving it up.
Besides writing, what do you love doing?
Well I have 4 children (and a dog) so when I’m not writing I am usually running round after them but if I do get some time to myself and I haven’t got a writing project on the go, I enjoy anything creative. I love painting (despite being no good at it at all), drawing, jewellery making, sewing and cooking. I also love to spend time outside, so I usually try (unsuccessfully) to grow veg in my garden, and I do a lot of walking.
What was the last thing you ate?
As I write this I have just got in from dropping my children off at school, and it has been a mad morning so I didn’t have time for breakfast. That means the last thing I ate was honey on toast at 10pm. I would happily live on toast! But I probably should stop eating just before bed.
When was the last time you laughed so hard your stomach protested, and why?
I was feeling a bit blue the other day so a dear friend of mine sent me a photograph of himself transformed by a make up app. He looked a lot like my old maths teacher, and it tickled me a lot. Cue hours of fun with silly photo face changer apps. It stopped being funny when I used an app to age myself though, that was just scary! Which reminds me, I must continue my search for the fountain of youth...
Tell us something about where you live
I am very lucky to live in a tiny little town that’s surrounded on three sides by woodland. I just love to walk in the woods, it inspires most of my stories. There is something very peaceful about walking in the shade of trees, smelling the carpets of bluebells. There is a calm serenity in the forest that you don’t find in many places, I feel blessed to have such beauty right on my doorstep.
Tell us a random fact about yourself
I am a complete fan geek – I love Supernatural, Doctor Who, Marvel, and Sherlock. It’s my secret ambition to one day write a Doctor Who episode.
